Our blankets

When we at Freelayer developed the design for our horse blankets, we focused on three main areas: horse well-being, sustainability, and secure horse ownership.

Our primary priority is to ensure the horse's comfort and well-being. Both clipped and unclipped horses sometimes need a little help on rainy and windy days while still being allowed to move as naturally as possible. Therefore, our blankets are designed to effectively protect our horses and provide optimal freedom of movement, using high-quality textiles with breathability, which is crucial since horses produce significantly more body heat.

In line with our environmental awareness, we have aimed to reduce textile consumption and the use of harmful chemicals in our production. Our blankets are sustainably designed to be durable and withstand wet conditions, which reduces the need for frequent replacements and helps to minimize textile waste.

By providing information on horse behavioral biology and well-being, we contribute to safer and more responsible horse ownership. Our design and communication are focused on highlighting the importance of well-fitted blankets and guidance for the horse's temperature regulation, which in turn helps horse owners make informed decisions for their horses' health and comfort.

By integrating these principles into our design philosophy, we strive to give horse owners the tools and knowledge they need to create a safe and sustainable environment for their horses.

Innovative Design - We aim to think outside the box!

We wanted to create something entirely new and think creatively and innovatively with the horse's best interest in mind. The fundamental idea is that Freelayer's design should be based on maximum comfort for every type of horse. Therefore, we created a modular construction of blanket parts where the horse owner can combine sizes, fillings, and materials according to their horse's individual needs.

The patented front ensures that the blanket stays stable and keeps it in place to relieve the withers and shoulder from pressure and friction. Horses enjoy movement and should be able to move as freely as possible. The design is a significant part of our sustainability efforts as we can conserve our resources by replacing blanket parts as needed instead of discarding entire blankets produced in a resource-intensive way. We see a great opportunity to increase the lifespan of our blankets. It's a significant step forward!

The use of NFC (Near Field Communication) in Freelayer's horse blankets represents an innovation aimed at sharpening our product development and enhancing the experience for horse owners. In the future, digital passports for textile products will become a requirement, and therefore, it is something we want to implement in our blankets from the start. Here are some key reasons why NFC technology is valuable in our blankets:

  • Digital Traceability and Information: By integrating NFC chips into the blankets, we can provide detailed information about each individual blanket. Horse owners can easily scan the blanket with a smartphone to access important information such as washing instructions, size guide, and material information. This makes it easier for owners to care for and maintain the blankets properly.
  • Authenticity Verification and Quality Assurance: The NFC chips can be used to verify the blanket's authenticity. It also helps ensure that horse owners receive a high-quality product that lives up to Freelayer's standards.
  • Environmentally Friendly Reuse and Recycling: NFC can also facilitate the reuse and recycling of blankets in the future by providing information about materials and recycling opportunities, aligning with Freelayer's commitment to sustainability.

By incorporating NFC into our horse blankets, Freelayer is taking a step towards a more connected, responsible, and innovative future in horse care and sustainability.

FAQ - frequently asked questions

Do you have to put all the parts together every time you put on the blanket?

No, once you have put all the parts together and adjusted the cover, you only button it at the belly band and the side buttons on one side. As many steps as with traditional blankets.

Will there be a higher neckline?

Yes, we are working on ongoing development of the assortement and will also have more design options in the future.

Is there a blanket with more lining?

We are working on supplementing our existing parts with both design options and liners.

How do you care for the Lightweight Rain blanket?

The blanket has a dirt-repellent and quick-drying surface that is easy to wipe off with a wet cloth. The blanket is also machine washable up to 40 degrees, but with each wash, the water-repellent textiles lose a bit of their rainproof function as the material's technical membrane wears.

Where is the NFC chip located?

The NFC chip is on the left side of the withers. A black label with the text FREELAYER.

How to read the NFC chip?

Scanning an NFC chip (Near Field Communication) is a simple process that can be performed with most modern smartphones. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to do this:

1. Check for NFC Support: Ensure that your smartphone has NFC capabilities. Most modern smartphones, including Android and iPhone, are equipped with this technology.

2. Activate NFC:

  • On Android: Go to Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences (or similar) and turn on NFC.
  • On iPhone: NFC is usually always on, but some older models may require activation in the settings.

3. Launch NFC App:

  • On Android, you can use many different apps to read NFC tags. Search in the Google Play Store for "NFC reader" to find a suitable app.
  • On iPhone, simply open the camera app or use an NFC reader app from the App Store for older models.

4. Place the Phone Near the NFC Chip: Hold the back of your smartphone close to the NFC chip. NFC chips typically have a range of about 4 cm (1.5 inches).

5. Read the Information: The phone should automatically recognize the NFC chip and display relevant information or perform a preset action.
